Tickover ?

I took my z650 out for its test ride today and all was well apart from the tickover seemed a little high ? I adjusted it as low as the turn screw would allow but it still seemed too high ..around about 20000 ? What should the tickover be idling at ?

About 1000 - 1200 rpm

Lower than 1000 is not great as oil flow is low

Sparky, assuming the 650's have a similar Mikuni Carb as the 900/ 1000's, you have somehow got the slides out of adjustment with the mechanical linkage.
I have done this often. When you sync the carbs, you adjust the slides to be equal by setting them with a 0.7 mm round gauge, or by a ball bearings dropping thru the throat, or preferably with a manometer.
Your slides have been set, without taking into account the linkage. You will have to set the linkage with the idle adjustment somewhere in the centre of its travel, then re-sync the carbs (lower the slides equally and check with manometer or other method).
As Pigford says, the idle should be about 1000 rpm.

Cheers folks ..ill see what i can do. Ive never tackled carb adjustment before and it all sounds a wee bit too technical for me

ill have to get it looked at by a bloke who can

Dont forget to check your throttle cables too,if there is not enough slack in them the turn screw will have limited effect as the cables will keep the linkage away from the stops,good luck

Hummm ...i dont know what happend but the tickover has sorted itself without me tinkering with it again ?? Maybe the cable just got trapped and its settled down now .
