zrx1100 swingarm into z1000j frame

#1 PostAuthor: Pasc » Thu Jan 25, 2007 9:09 am

Reading in this months classic bike about Alan Coopers Lawson Rep the fitting off the Zrx1100 swingarm was described as "a straight swap" has anybody here done this mod and was it a straight in/ out. I've been considering it for a while now and keen to get started.
Cheers.

did it on my z1100r about 6 years ago so the brain cells are abit hazy.
it near enough is a straight swap no cutting of frame or swinger, just got some spacers made for the zed swinging arm spindle and the bearing(standard spindle is alot thinner).
and spacers for the top of the shocks,4.5 inch gixer wheel and a 530 zx10(the old one)for an offset sprocket.
160 back tyre,with a reversed rear sprocket from b&c.
looks good ,goes good.
surprised more peep's dont do it.

Thanks for the swift reply Kawaman. A couple of questions though, when you say you had spacers made for the arm, were these in the form of sleeves so as to avoid drilling the pivot holes on the frame and retain the stock z1000j pivot bolt ?
Secondly, can you remember if there is much difference in the widths of both arms ? Did you need to make spacers or grind the zrx arm to get the same width as the stock arm ?
Finally, does the Zx10 engine sprocket come with a built in offset ? I'm probably going to be fitting a pair of Dymags I've got knocking about so may not need the sprocket but it's always handy to know of Offset Kwak sprockets.
Thanks again for your time.
Just need to find a reasonably priced zrx arm now.

I've got a ZRX 1200 swing arm and the width at the pivot point is approx. 235mm and approx. 270mm between the rear wheel adjusters.
The ZRX arm arms are much wider than a standard Z arm and so need spacers to line up the rear shocks with the frame mountings.
My ZRX 1200 swing arm is up for sale for ?125 and includes swing arm pivot, rear wheel spindle, wheel adjusters and brake torque arm.

The ZRX arm is the same width as the 1000R arm and therefore I assume J arm, its a few millimetres wider than the arm on the earlier bikes. The pivot is thicker it's going to be more accurate to get sleeves made to use the standard pivot than to try and drill the frame, apart from the fact it still leaves you the option of going back to standard.
As Jack says the arm is much wider at the rear you'll really need to get new shock mounting pins made and get them welded in to enable you to space the shocks out at the top, and you may no longer be able to use the standard rear footrest mountings as it's wide enough to foul on the early bikes, don't know about the J ones, they might be okay. A 5.5" wheel will still be a struggle, a 4.5/160 will work with about 10mm offset.

have to make this short as i keep getting locked out.
sleeved down arm to fit standard z1100r swinging arm spindle
never touched arm or frame, perfect fit. needed a spacer to sleeve bearing in arm zx10 had the right offset for me,4.5 gixer wheel used spacers for top shock mounts. agree with what chris and london calling say.
hope this helps.
this is all asuming z 1100r and 1000j are the same at the swinging arm pivot,i think they are,but don't know for sure.
i also spaced out the standard footrest plates ,very easy to do.
i use home made rearsets now so no probs.
looking for a zrx rear wheel now to get a matching set. ebay here i come!!!

Guys, thanks for all the info. Sounds like a very easy swap.
A couple of years ago I grafted a Gsxr1100m front and back end including swingarm into my 750 turbo and to put it mildly it was a fekkin pain in the backside :vis , spacers for the swingarm pivot, dog ones had to be fabricated, offset front sprocket, one off rear sprocket, space out footrest hangers. Half way through I wished I hadn't started. Got there in the end.
This swap seems more straight forward.
Jack I'll drop you a mail over the weekend regarding your arm.
Thanks again all :beer
