Guys
1977 Z1000. Bike just cut out. No spark at plugs, not much spark at points, very intermitent, battery fully charged, no obvious break in circuit. Any ideas ?
What is best electronic ignition system for it ?
Cheers

Get a Dyna 'S' fitted also coils too if budget allows. Enough power to light a bucket of p*ss , Once fitted you will never have to touch it again.

Check all earth connections, check battery voltage sounds electrical to me,is bike spinning over fast on starter?

Earth first, look for the most simple fix before you start spending money. Dyna's are excellent, but so are the stock Kwacka coils.

Take a close look at the ignition switch connections - especially where they are soldered
underside of the switch (opp end to where the key fits

)
Check voltage at the coils (low tension feed)...... should be over 12 volts

check your condenser also remove your battery leads and terminals and give a good clean with a wire brush but it does sound like your conderser

Guys
Still no spark. Have fitted Dyna S ignition.
Have checked soldered joints at iginition switch, seem ok.
Have voltage at junction between coils and Dyna.
Seems unlikley that both coils have gone ?
No obvious break in connections.
Earth from battery ok, batteru voltage seems ok.
Any ideas ?
Cheers

check that you have no bare wires touching the frame it sounds like its shorting out somewhere

The support post for the Dyna coils is very close to the low tension screw....
Insulate post or it WILL short out - as paul says

What voltage do you have at the coils?
Would you say that fitting the Dyna has altered anything ie do you still have the same fault?
Wire feed straight from battery to coils (preferably with a switch in but you can just cut the wire to turn off) for test purposes. this will eliminate any loom / switch problems and let you know which part of the system you have trouble with.

I had a similar problem and found it to be the IC Igniter wires breaking at the base where it goes into the rubber.

Connected +ve battery to coils and got a spark. Suppose I have got to trace all the way through with a voltmeter ? Quicker way anyone ?
Cheers

By the way, it is still the same fault as before I put the dyna on.

No just start checking the voltage drop through the system
