changing the shims

On measuring my valve clearances i have 2 that are tight. :(

Would anyone here be willing to loan me the tool thing to aid the extraction and exchange of the shims. :roll:
Not sure how the tool works but reference is made to it in my maual. :!:

Or is there another way to do this :?:

I think the club has the proper tool and will lend it to you if you are a member, they also do an exchange shim service.

If you buy the cheap tool that has a lever to push the tappet bucket down and a little bit of bent metal to hold it down then make very very sure that you put cloth around the cam chain tunnel. Otherwise when it pings out, and it will, you will have great fun taking the sump off to recover said bent bit of metal from inside your engine.

Dont forget you need a micrometer to measure the shim you take out as well. If it does have a measurement still written on it do not trust it measure it your self.

The shim exchange is a great reason on its own to sign up for membership.

I am down under and received 5 exchange shims post free from UK. At NZ$20 each for new ones exchange was a big $$$$ saver.

I have never tried the cheap tool, using the factory designed clamp which works very well. I would try and purchase one of those if available.

There seems to be a bit of debate at what point of the cam rotation does one make the measurement but I think with the lobe point away from bucket is correct.

Having a micrometer and some decent feeler gauges is a must.

The cam lobe must be pointing 180 degs (directly away) from shim for measurement, this is only way to ensure max clearance is measured!
