Hello, has anyone had a problem with the starter crunching on start up. The motor wil turn over fine, maybe 2 or 10 times and then theres a sound like two cogs aren't meshing and still spinning making a grinding noise. I've got the flywheel and the starter clutch off but there is no real evidence of of anything getting beaten to death. Any ideas?
Thanks Archie

New bearings and springs in starter clutch needed or starter motor commutator / brushes need cleaning.

Thanks Rich, starter clutch fine, i've had that apart and there isn't a mark on it. I also stripped the starter motor and cleaned it and again no marks, is there supposed to be any end play, there's about 4 or 5mm when its all back together.
Thanks Archie

It's the commutator, brush length and windings you need to check, along with the springs in the starter clutch and for signs of slipping on the rollers or gear.
Are you still using original earth and feed cables - if so replace them.
