Rusty Spokes

Has anyone rebuilt there spoked wheels? I've tried to keep the wheels clean but even down here in Spain it rains (believe it or not!) And the blighters still go rusty. So I'm thinking of getting chrome spokes! So my question is... is it possible to build your own wheels or would you get a professional to do it?

Chrome just ain't durable enuff..... Especially on stressed items... ie: spokes in tension....
The threaded ends will peel... S/S will not rust & polish up nice

hi bigmac, i built my z1 wheels myself with stainless spokes.i have now done over 6000 miles in the last twelve months with no problems. before you pull the wheels apart measure the wheels for any offset of the the hubs.take plenty of pics , and plenty of time and patience.it is not as hard as you might think. good luck

Hmmmm, don't see why not....
But people often take the opportunity to give the hub & rim a good buffing at the same time...

I can see that it would be a good opportunity to do that, but the thing is I use this bike to do a 100 miles a day and I think the hub would end up looking the same as it was after just a few weeks. I'm thinking of buying some winter wheels off fleabay and getting rust free spokes. Good idea or just a hell of a lot of work?

Stainless is the way to go, wipe clean etc. I wouldn't advise doing them yourself it is a job for a professional, whilst the method of re-lacing wheels is relatively simple in reality trueing and correct tensioning is a skill that takes many years to acquire, if you get it wrong the result could be catastrophic and it may not necessarily happen straight away.
