fuel tap help needed

#1 PostAuthor: zioclive » Wed Jan 14, 2009 9:16 am

Almost six month ago, I've decided to disassemble the fuel tap of my z1R.

Image

It was become so hard to turn that it was almost impossible opening or closing the fuel only using the hands .
Once disassembled I've changed all the gasket (3 if I don't get wrong) included in a “fuel petcock rebuild kitâ€￾ .

Image

At the beginning the fuel tap was smoot (easy to turn I mean) but now is extremely hard again, exactly as it was :-/ .
What can I do to definitely solve this problem ?
I was thinking to change the fuel tap using something like this.

Do you think that it can be a good solution ?

I need some hints please.

Many thanks

Fabio

Many thanks, I think that using a Mont Pingel I should avoid the problem of rusted fuel . :)

I used the same rebuild kit as well as a sleeve for the tap. Useless! The sleeve swelled up and turned to chewing gum.

A Pingel is the only tap that will work as far as I know

The Fuel tap on my (small tank) z1r is similarly stiff in operation - and has been for years. It is the same as the one in your photo. However I also have the larger tank which has a different fuel tap fitted. On the larger tank the actual tap part (ie the bit you grab hold of and turn) is bigger, so you can get more leverage on it and it is much easier and less fiddley to use.
You mention Rust ! If the source of the rust is your fuel tank - and not your Petrol Retailer ! - I would recommend you get it attended to prior to fitting a new tap. Especially such a fine and expensive piece of kit as a Pingel tap. which although it will have a gauze filter on it - is not really addressing this seperate issue.

Many thanks guys for the detailed answers.
I think the rust in the tank it will be hardly resolved.
Anyway I'll have to try, otherwise I'll never completely solve the problem .

Yes I agree the rebuild kit has been useless, low price > bad result .

Yeah, I had the same problem with my CSR. Pingel is definitely the way to go.
