I have a 1978 Z1000 A2, i'm in the middle of a renovation and have just noticed that I have two front disc's fitted of different width's, 0ne is 4.5mm and the other is 6mm. Firstly is this correct (I suspect not) and if not what width should they be? I have just bought two discs of 4.5mm off ebay, can I use these?

Thank's guy's

if I'm not mistaken Z900A4 was the last Zed to use 6mm discs, Z1000 A1 and after were fitted with 4.5mm ones, your bike might have been one equipped with one side disc originally and somebody upraded to twin disc setup with an older type disc , so your ebay ones would be correct, out of interest was 4.5mm on the left hand side?

Thank's for the reply hanskloss, yes, it is on the left. Putting two and two together from what you say i'm assuming this confirm's that it is indeed an upgrade from a single disc model?

I have a 77 kz1000 with 6mm single disc on left side which i believe is standard
going to upgrade it to twin discs, i have 2 x 4.5mm .
can i use just one 4.5mm disc to save on the work or is it best to change both discs.
magik did you notice any probs when you were running with 2 different size discs

chrisu, yes, it is a US import! bunnysz, I've not ridden the bike yet, I bought it from a guy on Ebay last year but I do know for certain that the previous owner used it daily for work for a fair few years and allthough he told me that he'd had no problems of any kind to speak of (well he would wouldn't he) I can only assume that if there had been a major breaking problem then he'd have changed it? so, to answer your question ........No, I don't THINK there were any problems!

Best to change both and have a bit less unsprung weight, gives the front suspension a slightly easier time.

Having read this now, I reckon everyone (with twin disc) have rushed out to their garage/liviing room to check their discs.

I remember one of the guy's out here was talking about the same thing on his Z1000......1 x 6mm and 1 x 4.5mm. Don't believed it was causing any noticable problems, just had him concerned as well, after finding it.

Magic that definately was upgraded than, fitting two different discs should give no probs at all, one would possibly heat more than the other but that's just theory, my Z900 is American import and was single disc when I bought it,
Bunnys it's only four bolts and tab washers so not much work involved, best change both and sell the 6mm one
