ELR Alternator cover grommet leak

#1 PostAuthor: Magnum1 » Sun Jan 04, 2009 5:05 pm

Hi folks,
I replaced the square rubber unsulater grommet on my alternator cover and it keeps leaking. I've tried stripping it, cleaning and usng silicone, but it still leaks. Anyone got any idea where I'm going wrong?
Cheers,
Rod :(

Leak

#6 PostAuthor: greenlaningxt » Mon Jan 05, 2009 11:34 am

Mine Leaks as well, tried all sorts of sealant.

Seems as if it might been coming though the wire covers so tried to seal these as well.

Wish I still had some Hillman Imp Sealant they used to sell, it would eat its way into anything and seal it.

Lets us know what cure you come up with.!!!!

Clean off all of the silicon including the "extra" silicon from the engine casing and the grommet.
Buff up the rubber grommet with rough emery paper to provide a rough keyed surface.
Apply a little silicon, press fit to casing, apply new gasket with light smear of grease and there you go.

Did most of that the first time, but I didn't buff the grommet. So that could be the key (no pun intended!). Too cold to go and mess about now, but will feedback as and when.

Use a decent silicone, most of them are shite I use Dow Corning 791 which is a low modulus silicone and it works a treat, I also use it on the cam end rubbers, actually I think it's number has now changed to 797.

As it goes, I've got a tube of Kawasaki bonding paste somewhere, but that wont fill up the holes, so I'll give the Loctite a go.

Magnum1, I think the main cause of these leaking rubber grummets is as mentiioned above... leaking or rather seeping of oil along the insulation of the three wires protruding thru the rubber. This wire insulation becomes porous with age.

Another cause is not wanting to wait for the sealant (silicone or loctite) to cure, before bringing it into contact with oil. Be prepared to spend some time on cleaning before sealing and buttoning up.

Tell you what Garn, it's gonna be a real painstakingly slow and careful job the next time I do it.
Cheers, I know what you're saying.
