I'm just about to take my crankcase upper to a guy called JOHN WILLIAMS who runs a small coachworks business south of Bicester, Oxfordshire.
He's going to repair the starter motor enclosure. I'll let you now how it goes.
(Quite) interestingly, he did say that certain Jap alloys have constituents which make welding difficult or impossible. I've heard similar comments in discussions about polishing on this site.
Let's see if Kwacker alloy is co-operative! I know many members have had fins etc repaired successfully, so I'm sure it'll all go just fine.

Japanese alloy castings are pretty crap, therefore welding can bit a bit hit or miss, a good welder can usually overcome but even the best of them can hit an area that can be extremely difficult to weld, fingers crossed.

well a least we're looking at a quick verdict - dropped it off this AM, ready for collection tomorrow!! If only the rest of the resto world was like that

i had one welded up about 25 year ago ,a so called friend came to strip my engine cases for me,left one bolt in under the starter motor area,cranked the bolts up to split them,and snapped a big piece of casing off.it was clean through the bearing jurnal and locating pin.took it to a chap in burnley and he charged me £25 to weld it,he said it was pretty easy to do,so it shouldnt be that bad mate.might be a bit dearer now though.
