Am I right in thinking the cylinder head washers are copper and that I can use them again if I heat them up with a blow torch untill red then let them cool again?

Correct
Standard they are plated with nickle? When you cook 'em it will trash the plating but will anneal them, thereby making them malleable enough to seal nicely when torqued. I re-annealed mine successfully and reused them

Steve, agree with Vduk, however, I believe on the Z1 series and the Z900-A4, they were all raw copper (not plated) then later they were steel with only the four ouside washers raw copper.
Also, regarding the copper washers, when you say "let them cool" this gives the impression of slow cooling, where as the softing of copper process usually requires "cherry red" heating then the quick quenching in water. The steel washers will not crush as the copper and should not be subject to this process.
