I`ve just had some rechroming done by a firm in Watford, Herts and would have a couple of comments to make.
The firm in question normally do work for aircraft companies and was one of the cleanest operations I have ever seen.
I did ask them to replicate the Japanese chrome as closely as possible but because the tinwork I submitted was rusty they had a problem in doing so.
We all know that the Japs never polished their tin before chroming so you get a bit of a dull finish. Any rusty metal must be polished to remove rust and then coated with copper before chrome. This then leaves a much brighter shine than original.
I reckon the rear mudguard cost £100. It did have 6 coats of copper though. The finish is of course excellent but now outshines all the other brightwork on the bike.
The number of chrome platers around here has diminished somewhat due to the environmental regulations regarding disposal of the spent chemicals.

Trouble is the arse holes in government stand up and say to us 'Thou shalt not not do this that and the other that keeps you and you employees off the king cole' but we will positively encourage people to get the same stuff done in China where they don't give two f***s about the environment.
Net result - we know have virtually no manufacturing left in the is country, even graphic design, print and even web design is being punted out to India. Our remaining companies, most of which are probably owned by other countries, can't even afford to answer their own frigging phones !!! "Good afternoon sahb,I am Mr Patel, what am I being able to be doing for you sahb?.... What are you meaning you are not understanding me?....I am sorry shab but I am only being able to be giving you pointless platitudes and relentlessly transfer you to other people being paid three grains of rice a month who have no idea how to help you ......."
Unless the spineless arseholes in government put some very serious blocks on importing from the far East we won't even be able to afford crap from China let alone food ... unless something is done VERY fast we are going to have unemployment on an epic scale soon. Biggest printer in Bristol just gone tits up as has a small printer who has been going longer than me!

Try these guys
http://www.londonchroming.co.uk/
The work they did for me was first class - not cheap but great quality. The front mudguard had a small dent which they fixed and you would never know plus there is no sign of any pock-marking from old rust (which I have seen on some restored bikes).
Good luck

I think the UK is in trouble. From what I see on TV and read in the press your biggest problem is firstly Islamafacation, secondly, political correctness that castrates any attempt at addressing Islam, then street gangs and chavs
Good luck.
