Smokin'

#1 PostAuthor: Taffus » Mon Aug 11, 2008 11:49 am

Went to calstock this weekend and I had complaints from Ralph and Steve that my Gpz 1100 is smoking on the over run. It does use a lot of oil, Ralph seems to think it could be the valve guides and or carburation. Steve said rings (that might have been because he was chatting up a "halfling"

If it is the valve guides is it worth me stripping the head off and sending it to SEP or debbens? or should I brave it and do it myself?

Hi Mark

It is definitely burning oil on overrun (blue smoke) which will be your valve guides.

When you gave it a big handful you disappeared into a big cloud of smoke which I suspect was partially down to carburation judging by the colour, but there may have been some oil smoke as well, so one cannot rule out rings/bores. They need to be measured, by someone with the suitable measuring gear.

If you strip it down, you could get Steve at Piston Broke Engineering in Bristol to fit new guides. He will also be able to do a re-bore. He does work for all the local bike dealers including the Kawasaki Centre. He also supplies Wysco pistons/ rings etc, but doesn't build engines only does the engineering on them, but has been there since Stonehenge had a roof on it :D

Do Debben Performance do their own engineering work? If so I'm sure they would do it to a high standard, but there a lot of monkeys out there - when I bought the Old Gurl she had been recently re-bored and the nobs had bored the barrels to drawing rather than to each individual new piston, so the bloody things were barely touching the sides
