Sump baffling

Still suffering with the oil light flickering when under hard acceleration so thought I'd take a look in the depths of the lube system.

Strainer is clean as a whistle, pump's fine so refitted with new seal (cheers Pigford).

Looking at the sump casting, at the 'gates' in particular, would it be OK to partially block one of the passages to 'slow' the oil from one end of the sump to the other :?:
This is what I have in mind..... Any comments welcome.

Fluff, I wouldn't like to comment whether the mod would be what you are looking for but I would have thought maybe Steve Debben would know if it's advisable or not. Looking at your design I would have thought that the problem may be that under hard acceleration it might slow down the movement of oil to the rear of the sump but any oil left at the rear of the sump would only travel forward back through the restricted passage at the same rate which again may leave the front of the sump and oil pump restricted of oil I do remember there used to be a one way gate assy available that was basically a hinged gate that would close under acceleration (holding the oil forward of the sump) and open again fully under decelleration. I haven't seen any advertised for a few years though but a good engineer / ally welder might be able to fabricate something similar.

BF, I'm sure they used to fit a 'hinged' gate affair somehow :?:

PM Steve Romeo Debben, he'll have the answer

Debbens do a windage tray that should do the job,

http://www.debben.co.uk/acatalog/z1000.html

the other option is to modify the oilpick up so it picks up at the back of the sump. As standard it picks up near the front so when you are accelerating flat out its sucking on air cos the oil is all at the back!

Fitted a windage tray to me RedZed (being taken away tomorrow  ) and cost less than £20
Needs the engine split tho :!: :!: :!: :!: :!:

I've made a decision.....

Like Pasc stated, it needs to have some form of one-way system between the front and back of the sump. I'm therefore going to fabricate a lightweight hinge and mount it at the front 'gate', allowing oil only to come forward from the rear of the sump, the hinge closing under acceleration to prevent the oil going backwards.

Looking at the bottom end though, this will only come into play with the first 1" of oil in the sump pan.... oil can still pass over the top level of the sump anyway, but at least it'll slow the rush of oil down a bit.
Can't do any harm going ahead with this (famous last words)

I'll keep this topic updated on my progress (with pics).

Hinge the other side to where you have drawn it. As you say the oil needs to be stopped from running back with hard acceleration. Unless you have an extended sump they hold the oil in place at the oil pump strainer.

After a few hundred kms I thought I better do a proper oil change so drain oil pull filter out and take sump off to clean the small gauze screen and I find this .

I remember years and years ago "legend" had it that this motor may have been in a speedway outfit and that sump gates were quite a common mod back then.klik on pic for larger.CheersKen.

Hi Fluff, I had the same promlem a couple of years ago on a Z1000 A1, try'd every thing :- pump, oil presure switch, wireing, and after totaly flushing the system then rebuilt the motor the problem was still there!!!! so when i droped the sump again i looked at the O'ring that sits between the sump and the block noteced it had a flat section about 30% of its diameter, surly not that simple i thought, put it back together and BINGO no more problem.

I think BF has bunged a new one in..... :?:

My Zed has a slightly flickering oil light ........ noticed it more when doing the 1/4 mile up at Wroughton last Sunday

I'm watching this closely as if this cures it, I may go the same route.... just to be safe

Yes Piggy, I did fit a new O-ring, both between the sump & crankcase and on the oil pump itself.
Also 'made' a hinge, OK not quite as nice a job as the above and what Steve Debben sent me a pic of  , but, it seems to be behaving as it should...!
Not that i'm paranoid or owt' but i've fitted a higher wattage oil warning lamp bulb aswell :??
Kenif - That mod you have is very similar to the 'Debben' mod.... very nice!

Mark, Andy Z1r's oil light has been flashing like an indicator notification for two years and he has the proper swinging gate baffle fitted.
Initially i believed it was tiny particles of metal in the oil shorting the switch but then came down on the side of air bubbles being formed in the 'bell mouth' strainer (entry point to the pump).

Mark i did notice that you oil pressure was fluctuating wildy on the gauge even when standing still!!!! (on tickover or revving) which did concern me to say the least.
I believe you can disregard the switch to some extent but the gauge does not lie.

I have tried to insist that the drag bike runs a higher oil level than would be required for the road but you can take a horse to water.

Is anyone who is experiencing these problems running an oil cooler and if so which way up is it fitted???????

By the way, Barry's Z1000 turbo J1 has the original engine, crank, bearings etc and the oil supply for standard engine requirements, also feeds the turbo. He simply took the bulb out i believe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And that's 200+ BHP at 9.5 seconds material!
