Smallest battery to run a Zed with no electric start.

What is the smallest amperage battery I can use to run a Zed with no electric start and no lights?

The charging system will still be in place.

What do total loss systems use?

Cheers

Is it running on pionts, or have you converted to electronic ignition? and how small do you need to go?

Hi Big Glenn.

It's running on points at the moment.

I will run a brake light and the horn for the MOT.

I will retain the charging system and it has already been converted to a rec/reg pack.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

A day time MOT doesn't even need a brake light  although common sense says best to have one

Exactly my thinking Mr. Pigford.

I was thinking of doing something similar on the rickman and my electrical wizard around 8 amps should be enough, and use a gel battery cause you can mount them anywhere!!

I reckon 8 amps would be more than enough, with only the ignition system to run, and the charging system still hooked up. Have a look at batteries for 125cc sports bikes.

I would have thought the charging circuit would put out enough to run the bike.

Does anybody have any output figures?

Maybe a small battery would help stabilise the system using the sense wire from the rec/reg unit but I'm only guessing.

Who built the Gardner Moriwaki replica, doesn't he run a total loss system using a battery from a model shop or something similar?

Boyer do a power box which doesn't need a battery . Reg' and rect' built in . Got one on my lawson and it works ok .

Do you run the Lawson without a battery fitted Fer?

How much are they?

I see on the Boyer website they mention a capacitor in the power box.

That is sort of what I meant about using a small battery to stabilise the system.

I'll try and give them a ring tomorrow.

The technical Guy at Boyer doesn't think that kicking the bike over will spin the alternator fast enough to generate enough power to fire the engine( I think he said around 300rpm).

Although a push start does work for race bikes.

He thinks maybe a 3Amp battery with their Power Box might just do the trick.

So I might as well just try a small Amperage battery with what I've got.

The Power Boxes are £78 delivered.
