whats the first thing to look for on an old Z that has

(a) brake squeal on braking and

(b) squeaking from front wheel?

the pads dont seem to be binding or anything and braking is good;

any advice appreciated

Pack Copper Grease behind floating brake pad and smear a little around edges. Also make sure caliper is sliding properly on shafts.

Like they have said .... keep it well greased with copperslip ... because it don't take long to build up with brake dust ( more with drilled disc )

The pads might be glazed. You could try roughing them up a bit with coarse sandpaper laid on a flat surface (steel sheet / plate glass).

Have you got the metal shims in? My Z1b squeeled like a stuck pig until I sourced the shim (missing from my caliper) with coppaslip now squeek free.
