with the choke fully on, the engine is idling at 4,000 rpm !! :shock:

with it off, idle is under 500, well qite hard to tell what it is as the rev counter isn'tthat accurate at the low rpms.

midway on choke is about 2,000 whihcis a bit more reasonable.

not sure how to cure this.

I tried to wind in the throttle knob and that does increase the idle (no choke) but the idle with choke is goin g above 4,000!!

the iar screws are set 1.5 turns from fully in - will turning those make the idle with choke more sensible?

As the engine warms up you gradually take the choke off. These are big engines and take a while to warm up. I'm sure if you take it for a good blast you'll find all is well.

You would expect it to rev a bit with the choke on - mine does anyway

When the engine is warm with the choke off set the tick-over to around 1000revs

i think you will find they all idle high with the choke fully on :?:

though i never tend to leave mine on fully anyway,will have to try it and see,I think you will find adjusting the air screws will not have the effect you are looking for as they only adjust the mixture for idle to low throttle settings and the choke tends to overide this to richen up the mixture for ease of starting. make sense :?:

thx for quick reply; sounds like it is normal then - just idling at 4 K is a bit scary :shock:

yep - the idle screws affect mixture and are only effective upto 1/8 throttle.

how long does it take to warm up? I am off road at the moment so can't blast it.

Yes completly normal too idle that high with full choke, I never leave it like that.
Start it on full then back off choke immediatly to about 1500 rpm. I let mine idle at that adjusting the ckoke to keep it at about that for 2 mins before I try and ride it; then ride off and fully back choke off after about two miles.
I would think it would take about 10 mins at rest to come fully warm.

Always best to start bike up & ride off straight away (going steady tho!) so that the engine warms up quickly & plenty of oil is pumped around the engine :wink:

Its not good to start the engine from cold and let idle on low revs....
4000 rpm is a bit high, but thats what the lever is for... try opening it up 3/4 action :wink:
