removing drive sprocket nut.....

#1 PostAuthor: 02GF74 » Wed Jul 02, 2008 6:14 am

..... mine failed to be undone by windy gun!!!

any tips?

(haynes say lock rear wheel using brake which unfortunately I was not able to do as I had taken that off!!! oh well, need to put that on and try again with breaker bar).

anyone know part number of the nut? and the lock tab washer for it?

is it likely the local bike dealer can get parts this old?

ta.

Do you have a big enough pipe feeding your air impact wrench? I know I don't. I took the 36mm nut of the front sprocket on my FJ12 last night with the air gun, but I waited for the compressor to really fill the tank so I had maximum welly and after a while it came off. I have to say I was on the point of seeking an alternative. I do need a larger diameter line for my windy gun. You may also? :D

standard hose, pressure whacked up to max, no joy :(

it is not LH thread - I checked but I think that the direction the sprocket spins will tend to do up the nut.

Worried about using a breaker bar as if it slips, then good-bye to engine fins :o

May try to grind down the lock washer to under cut it to release some tension on the nut - I guess I can always make another from some steel plate.

27mm socket, breaker bar and BIG mallet, pref shot loaded. Pop it into gear and get someone to hold the back wheel as yer brakes aren't connected, push the breaker bar to take up the slack and then whelt it with the mallet. With enough determination this should shock it loose. If you have a third (and brave) set of hands you could have someone keeping pressure on the bar whist another applies the impact. It sounds worse than it is  I wouldn't recommend undercutting the nut. I've never known one not come off, just needs some persuasion

oops - I thought I may ahve said it wrong - I have brakes, just no wheel in. not a big deal just time.

your'e right about the 27 mm socket - mine is 6 sided impact jobbie that is less likely to round off the nut.

cheers - yep - "done the take up tension with bar then whack it with mallet" thing before; not failed yet.

Wrap the chain around it! That locks it,then stick scaffold pole or similar on end of socket/rachet.This will work but you won`t find it in the Kawasaki manual :D

Warm the nut up, it may have studloc on it. Put a length of tube onto a t-bar you will get better control as you don't have to "swing" on it.
