restoring shocks on a 74 Z1 900

#1 PostAuthor: jdsmithinc » Fri Jun 27, 2008 1:58 am

I have a set of factory shocks for my bike but the springs are all rusty. I cannot afford to buy new ones right now but plan on doing it later. What do you guys think about me sanding them down real good and painting them to match the frame? (Gloss black) I have no idea how this will turn out if I do it. Thanks, Joe.

Joe,just bear in mind that the shocks will have 30+ year old damping oil and the springs may be a little tired as well.
Better to have black springs and a usable bike

If there are no leaks why not dismantle them and have the springs rechromed, or it may be cheaper to buy some replica ones (from the states 1/2 price with the $=£) we were very happy with the ones fitted to our winter project to restore a Z1B see the projects section of this site
Now where did I leave my Keys!

I sanded the springs down with out taking the shocks apart, then I painted them. Here is what they look like now.

When I took off those silly struts, and put these on it, I sighed a breath of relief. Not only does the bike ride a lot better, but it handles much better now. I will just have to get used to how high it rides now.
