My Z1 with all the suedo custom crap w/ some improvement

Here are a few pics of my ride since I put the kerkers on it and the original turn signals. I found an original complete 75 that had a set of carbs and I am thinking about using those. I will be using the guages off of it as well as touching up the rear shocks and using them. I thought about using the sissy bar but I just cant stomach the idea right now. I followed a fellows advice and put in some 115 mains in the carbs but it doesnt like a lot of throttle with those in,(running a little rich) so I am going to put in the 113's that were in the rebuild kit and see what they do. I also noticed that even after I rebuilt the carbs I still have fuel coming out of the overflow tubes. I want to use the 75 carbs but will have to purchase the T fittings for the fuel supply lines. One thing I would like to know is if the handle bars on the parts bike are the same as OEM for my 74? The guy said he bought the 'parts bike" new and never changed anything other than that dumbass sissy bar. So what do you guys think so far?

Sorry I didnt realize the original pics were deleted. Here they are again.

None of the bars on either bike are original... that bike would look so much better with an original looking seat !!!!!

My wife basically has my dog trained to "pose" when he sees the camera. It really depends on which camera I use. Anyhow, back to the bike. So I still need to get the right handle bars, and you say the seat is wrong? The pan for the seat is actually the one that came on the bike, it has all the little stickers on it. I guess someone had it recovered, and I kinda like it. To each his own I guess. I am going to either clean up those old shocks and paint the springs black or just break down and buy a new set. (probably recondition the old ones for now.) Does anyone know what tools I will need and the proper information I will need to set the float hieght on my carbs? I have just put a rebuild kit in them and one is leaking from the overflow. Bike also doesnt like a lot of throttle at once. I have also noticed that the bike is not charging the battery. It is neverending I know.

I think the first thing you should do is establish what year/ type of bike you have there are quite a few things that don't add up? and are confusing. like the rear wheel, the tank looks like it's an ltd model, the clocks are Z1/B the front forks are Z1 A/B the carbs on the bike are Z9 the one's on the bench are Z1 A/B, the seat is an LTD item, the side panels look like Z1 items. i think the only way to really identify what you have is from the frame and engine numbers.

Sorry, that was rude of me

The bike is a 74 z1 900 and the engine is from a 73. I dont know about the seat, only that it is a direct fit and looks like it was recovered in the past. The rear wheel is identical to the one from the 75 parts bike that I bought, I believe that the stupid struts make it look odd. The forks on the good bike look different because I have not raised the front end up yet. Someone took a stab at lowering it. I am not too sure about the tank, but is identical to the one off the 75 other than the colors. The carbs on the bench are the ones I plan on using but need to get the T fittings for the supply lines. By the way the frame number is Z1F-21504. I cant remember the engine numbers right now. So now all I have to do is continue to find original Z1 parts to go back on it. Are you saying that the guages are not for a 75? Will it matter if it is mixed up from 73 to 75? I could put the 75 back together since the frame and engine numbers both say it is a 75. Anyhow, it is running and thats all that matters at this point. Thanks, Joe. P.S. I love constructive criticism, keep it coming.

Sorry, I didnt mean for that last post to come off as smart. Really, I do like to recieve constructive criticism. It makes room for improvement. I want to get it right and not waste any money on it.

New pics of what I have done so far

Here are a few pics of what I have done to the bike so far. I put some correct guages on it. I bought an idiot light cover for it from z1 enterprises but they sent me one for a 73 (words over top of lights). I guess this would be ok since the tank, side panels, tail and of course the engine are off a 73. I put on a new chain, clutch cable, shock reflectors, turn signals, and of course changed the oil. I got a set of 125 main jets from a local shop, and put on the kerker pipes. She runs really good now with the exception of backfiring on deceleration. I put on a few gaskets to stop a pesky oil leak before I changed the oil. And in my opinion the greatest improvement I could have made for it would be the correct handle bars which I bought from z1 enterprises also. Now all I need is get the paint done (if I even decide to go that route), buy a points cover, and buy a rectifier since mine took a dump on me somewhere on the 50 mile maiden voyage I took after all this was done. So come on guys take a good look and give me some feedback. This is only the second bike I have restored, and I want this one to turn out better than the first.

I forgot to mention that I did get a title for the bike and it is now tagged, insured, and on the road legally!! They titled it as a 74 though, which I guess is right considering the frame number is z1f-21504 with a man. date of 08/73. The engine however is a 73 ( z1e 09573). I also am looking into buying a new correct seat from z1enterprises to top it off.

Rear wheel looks like a 16" from a 900 ltd or has had a 16" rim laced up to hub , should be an 18" rim for a '74/5 non ltd . Keep dealing with Z1 enterprises as Jeff is good . They have combined regulator/rectifier units which is what I would fit as the seperate units are crap and they also have new points covers . Bike is looking good .

looking good, a new paintwork and an original seat would finish it off, but know you yanks like those seats. but if you want it back to original you will have to change the rear wheel, but i like it

Hi jd,
Like they say a standard seat would make it look better (only in my opinion) and a pillion grab rail would finish the back end off. rear wheel depends on your opinion, but it should be 18inch like fer says, though often the smaller but wider 16inch looks good.
Nice bike though :up
