Can anyone advise me as to what the number stamped on the advance retard unit for a 1978 Z1R is ?

The one I am using has "1009" stamped on it

I would be interested to know if this is the correct unit

hi

just checked my Mk2 - it has 1006 on the advanced retard unit - so if you're using a Mk2 ignition you'll need that one presumably.

could be easier to go the dyna route courtesy of Jeff at Z1 enterprises. and go back to the 1003 unit.

Right

Thanks too both of you for that, Im gonna have a fiddle swapping bits around.

Whilst it runs really well on the unit marked "1009" it wont run properly with standard size needles 5CN15 (too rich)

It will run well with needles 5DL31 from a Z1000 B1/B2 26mm carbs

Hmm more brain aching thinking

Thanks again

Gary

Right

I tried out my A/R unit with 1006 on it and there is not much difference to using the unit with 1009 on, the engine seemed a little flatter but not much

I am wondering if i should forget about using the standard Z1R needles and keep the ones i have from a set 26mm carbs in there and upping the main jets from 105 to 107.5.

The plugs are a light grey colour, so at least it is not fouling them up like it used to

any thoughts

DLs will give you a slightly richer bottom and leaner top to the needle range than CNs, The letters denote what taper they have (in this case dual taper) and the 5 in the "5DL" is the length code.

What needle jet is in them, std should be O1 or O3? You will need to drift them out and back in, you can use the emulsion tube as a press for replacement but you risk stripping the threads if you do and it is certainly not advisabe. Main Jet for the D1 should be 107.5 according to the manual. Are they 3 hole or 5 hole emulsion tube?

What voltage do you have at the coils?

If it runs well with the Dls make sure the plug colour is Ok at about 7K. and leave them in. Light grey is good

Hello Rich

thanks for your reply.

Here is what i have fitted in the carbs.

The needle jet is a new 258-01 (Keyster carb kit), the old needle jets were very worn by comparison

The pilot jet is a 15 (new)

The main jet is a 105 (recomended is 107.5)

The needle is a DL ( as it runs too rich on the CN type)

The emulsion tubes are new aswell, they are for the Z1R 28 mm carbs in that they have a rubber "O" ring seal near the top of them, i seem to remember them being 3 hole

I modified the coils so they run via a relay straight off the battery so they have full battery voltage across them

Does any of that set up give any clues?

Cheers
Gary

Hmm i treid uploading some pix of the tubes but i cant

Mine have two rows of two holes going along the length of them and two rows of 4 holes along the length of them

I bought these from Zpower a while ago as it was pointed out to me that the ones i had were not correct
