A tale of woo :(

Having finished a re wire, of the above.
Last night. I started the bike. It purred. :D

Sounded gorgeous, it was running for about 5 - 10 minutes.

Revs being kept down, as it has had a full engine re build with a reconditioned cylinder head, with ported head, new valve springs, guides, seals etc.

The rev counter stopped working and then there was a nasty rattling coming from the top end.
On taking off the rocker cover, the Tacho drive gear has snapped, sheared off part of the gears from the exhaust camsaft.

First thoughts are I will have to take off the head, barrels and pistons. Strip, clean and re build head. Check main bearings, check bottom end for bits of metal. Maybe take the sump off.

Second thought, I may have to do a full engine strip down ?

Any thoughts ?

Hi lever 16062......firstly, i'm sorry to hear that such a bad thing has happened....what a bummer.

I had a cam chain slap against the casing....think it happened when the previous owner had it, i did'nt see any bits in the bottom end, but i stripped it for piece of mind. If it's piece of mind you want, then you may have to strip it

Very sorry to hear that piece of bad news.

Whilst you would probably get away with flushing it out, if you're anything like me you'd never enjoy riding it as you'd be constantly imagining a sliver of hardened gear running around the engine waiting to cause destruction. That being said I suppose if you get all the broken bits and reassemble them like a 3D jigsaw you may be able to tell if there is anything not accounted for.

I wish you better luck with it next time.

Depends on amount of damage, and what could be in the engine :?:

You could just drop the sump and check oil for swarf......

Then flush engine out with engine flusher stuff

Sounds like its a couple of small chunks....... so you could check the oil & watch out for bits & with luck get it all & match with missing bits, like a jigsaw...... Slim chance I know but could avoid total stripdown :?:

Thanks for advise.

There are 3, pieces missing off the cam and 2 smaller off the Tacho gear.

I will drop the Sump and try to flush out the bottom end, and match up parts.

However, I think I will end up, stripping the bottom end to be sure.

Thanks.

once you've got all the top end off and the engine out of the frame its only a few hours work to split the engine and reassemble.

A PITA but.....................
