Hi.Can anyone tell me if its posible to stripe the engine on my Z1000 A from the bottom end up to get to the gearbox. Ive had the top end fully rebuilt and now discovered a problem with second gear, it has started to jump back out or change up by its self. The engine is running so well after the rebuild i dont want to strip it again and wondered if i can take it out turn it upside down and go through the bottom. Any help would be appreciated.

Yeah that's probably the best way to get at the gearbox.

The answer to your question re-spliting engine cases and not disrupting head barrels is "Yes, it can be done". The engine will have to be removed and the engine cases split, leaving the the four centre journals bolts, to hold the crankshaft in place.

It would be a good idea to have someone look at it, to see if is definitely a defective gear and not a selector problem that may be rectified without spliting & removal of engine. Meaning you may only have to remove sprocket cover & sump to inspect.

Watch out for any "blueing" on the selector forks/gears hope this is of help.

Hello Mick, as has been suggested check for a bent selector fork, visable by scorching on the faces, also while you are in there check the engagement dogs on the side of the gear, if these have polished rounded off edges then you will need to replace or undercut the gear. Regards, Steve

Ash did mine a couple of years ago, with top end undisturbed.

Mine stuck in 4th gear.... turned out the gear selector forks were shagged, the fork ends had badly 'blued' and needed relpacing. This was caused due to the engagement dogs rounding off, by over eager gear changes
