Hi fella's not been on here for a while :(
I have sitting in my shed a Z1R engine (1075cc wiseco), exhaust (V&H) & all the electrics to run it. Any ideas what it will fit into (apart from a Z1R)? I had heard a Z650 is this correct. I'm looking at a long term project so can wait till I find a cheap doner bike (lots of other projects on the go). Also I have no carbs what works well & should fit OK, will have to be secondhand don't have the dosh for new stuff. For some reason Mrs & kids complain when they don't get fed
Looking forward to any advice you can give.

Zshed,

If the motor was to fit a z650 then it would most likley fit a zephyr 750 then!

If you uprated the soggy front fork springs and changed the tank for a Z1000 tank then the Zephyr starts to be a good idea

i have a few photys of japanese (yeah i know they are all japanese) bikes modified in this way-- send me your e mail and i'll forward them to you i think they look quite neat

this way you can get a good roadworthy runner for handy money and some subtle changes and you've got a '90s Z1000 on your hands

good luck with what ever you do

z1r engine will fit any of the z1, z1a z1b or z900 a4. Any of the carbs of these models will also fit a z1r engine.

Cheers for the comments guys, regarding the carbs does anybody know of a set that will improve the performance. When the motor was last run it had standard carbs which seemed to be restricting the motor. I've heard of GSXR carbs being used but don't know if its true or not.

Gixxer carbs are spaced the same as Big Kwaks, all you need is to match the inlet rubber sizes & make sure they have a larger bore/venturi so you can get more flow.
I'd avoid CV carbs as they are a compromise and usually difficult to tune

Pigford, thanks for that info.
Getting to my original post, does anybody know for sure if my motor will fit in a Z650 without major modification/cost?

on the frame front why not use a Z1R frame and alter it to your own style. i am on with a gpz1100 b which i am making look like a z650. all you need is an angle grinder (isn,t that right jan). if you get a rough frame or one that someone has buggered it is alot easier to do .mono shock etc. i am using a 1100 zepher tank and spoked wheels.

I know of a chap who is mid way though squeezing a thou motor into a Zed 650 frame. I can't get him on the phone at present, but a third party has told me that there was mucho firkin about required and you can't do much to the motor in situ. He's making it into a sixties style caf? racer. I'll try and get more info at some point from the horses mouth.

Nice one, when you're finished it would be nice to see a pic or two.
Looks like I'll be on the hunt for a cheap Z650 :)
As i said before, no rush as its going to be a long term project. Have to finish my old BSA 250 first :)

my buddy tim fitted a z1000 motor into a z650 frame but man it was tight and he had to remove a lug if i recall correctly ,he also had to do some other mods to it ,i do know it wasn't as easy as he first thought.
but good luck if youre gonna do it ,i think i would slap it into a z1000 frame as they come up quite regular on ebay for next to nowt for them

Must admit I'm getting the feedback from you guys that I needed. Will keep an eye out for a frame/rolling chassis that I could adapt.
Cheers again
