Coils

Fitting a set of Dyna coils to my z1b, but unsure which ones to buy, 3 ohm?
Also which leads are best the copper core ones or the others (silicon ?) ? Also I remeber reading a post that gave advice on fitting dyna coils to stop them cracking, any ideas, oh i have already fitted dyna s electronic ignition.

Green 3ohm coils are needed and I use Taylor or Dyna leads with no problems . Make sure the coils don't touch the frame brackets and that spacers are the same length at each end and they shouldn't crack .

Hello Dodgy Z1B, if you are using the stock coil spacers then a blob of silicon over the screws that hold the terminals onto the coils will stop the screws comming loose, as the coils get warm under the tank and cool down again and so on the screws can become loose, the silicon will also stop the voltage from the screw heads arcing across to the spacers, Regards, Steve

To keep the voltage from the screw heads on the coils from arcing to the spacers, I used two applications of electrical heat shrink on the spacers and trimed the ends. Looks good to

I think the Dyna ignitions run OK with 2.2 or 3.0 ohm....
I got 2.2 ohm coils with my Dyna 2000

and matched with those Iridium Racing Denso's, I could light a soggy spliff at 20 yards

Right eventually getting to do some work on bike started to fit dyna coils, just one quick question before i start making my mounts etc, as i dont have originals, which is the best way for them to sit, looking at them I assume the coil would sit with ht leads facing upwards and forwards, is this right ? any chance someone could post a pic of theirs in position ?

self Amalgamating tape has higher insulating values than both heatshrink and insulating tape and it has better heat resistance just a suggestion

Sorry to be a saver of money, and no one loves buying toyz more than me, but in my opinion, if your standard coils are sparking then use 'em along with standard plugs (NGKs are shit but Denso's regular plugs at £1.15 each are great). I replaced the points with Dyna-S cos it's less grief, but I have had zero grief from my standard coils. For the cost of these fancy pants coils, leads and plugs you could invest in some Snap-on tools taht will do your bike far more good!

Just to be sure ... your Z1B is a classic bike ... not some woopy doo race bike?

My bike runs as sweet as a nut on standard coils - don't be dragged into the big money spending for the sake of it

I only bought them because I had dyna s fitted and it was a pair of old scaby suzuki coils that were shoe horned in, which were only held in place
with one bolt on each. I am a great believer in if its not broke don't fix it

Dodgy, the Dyna coils are good stuff..... Standard coils can work alright for years, but when you fit upgraded stuff, those little niggles that you've lived with & learned to accept, can disappear, and you're left wondering why you didn't change years ago
Standard +30 yr old coil were frankly, just about up to the job.
Coils are one of the most crutial parts of the electrical system and need to be in top shape to get any engine to run well. Whenever theres an engine problem, checking the ignition system is always the first priority, then working thru' the fuel system......
If for example you had poor running/starting, its no good trying to sort out the carbs, without having the ignition setup 100%
Anyway, if you've got Dyna S it nice to have matching coils to get the full benefit of the upgrade
I agree it good to leave alone if its not broken, but half the fun of bikes is having a tinker and learning.....
