Temporary Gas Tank/jug...whatever

I want to make a temporary gas.....I mean petrol container so I can get the bike going and do the adjustments. I checked at a local bike shop for one and well...I'll put it this way, for $30.00 or $50.00 more I could get a gas tank for my car. So that's out. Also, the tank is still at the painters, and I really don't want to unpack the original one.

Any idea's ? I have a couple in mind, but I wanted to ask and see if there were some better/easier ones.

One is to just get a jerry can and put it above the bike in some fashion and siphon some gas down and then plug it into the fuel line. Simple. Drawbacks ?

The other is to get a container and rig some fittings to it and even get fancy and put a tap inline.

I use an old fuel tank off a lawn mower and comes with a fuel tap.

I seen Dr Rod use a fuel funnel, (well supported of course) that held enough fuel to set carbs up. Cheap and effective. Of course you could always buy one from Z1 enterprises for ?20

Excellent idea Iain - I have been pondering the same idea for when I am ready to balance my carbs. I've already blagged my mates Snap-on timing light and vacuum guages.

Hopfully I won't have enough time to wait for stuff from the States so the mower tank sounds right on!

Been there tried that,
Ok,went to a lawn mower shop,
made enquiries.
The difference in cost between old and new.
New i think ?50.
S/H.............forget now.
But when i shaked it thought
Maraca a go go. need petseal.
not rich but go for new
took that many moons with the order..........
got my deposit back

Just use a six foot long fuel pipe (?2) and your ordinary tank - but set it somewhere safe... but that was a long time ago and it needed painted anyway...

Our kid John Roscoe made a fuel tank from an old gearbox oil bottle the type with a plastic tube to get into side filler plugs. this works a treat hung from the garage roof.

I'v asked Mikey the ***** who lives over the road and is a 21st century Steptoe and Son wiuth his transit pick up to have a gander in the scrapers when he takes his next load over. Obviously he will forget and I'll have to carefully use my tank with some extensions on it. I'm going to stick my rusty old 'arris on it to set up the carbs and timing if it stops raining long enough to open the workshop door without flooding the place this weekend

i normally use a washing up liquid bottle with pipe on it when setting carbs but with injection you need long fuel lines from tank as you need a return to the tank

I use a two stroke tank from a pile of crap in a breakers . Cost was next to nothing and you can fit an inline tap to stop fuel leaks . The one I got has mounting points built in so it's easy to fit a strap to go on handlebars .
