Advice needed please.

I have a 1000J which I would like to convert to modern running gear including forks.

The bike currently has a JMC swing arm which I would like to retain. the swing arm would restrict me to a rear tyre width of 160.

Can anyboby advise of a suitable match?

I have been told that suzuki running gear tends to be a little narrower & therefore less complicated to fit.

Finally what problems can be expected with the fitting to the headstock?

Any help appreciated.

I run a JMC with a GSXR 180 x 17 rear, all you need is an off-set front sprox - Debbens do 'em, and away you go
If ur going to go for a fat back-end you may as well GO FOR IT
Most USD forks are a good inch or 2 shorter, thats the first hassle....
If you can get early GSXR USD forks (89-92) they're longer
Then you'll need to get a standard stem fitted to suitable yokes to suit the forks.......
My front end is a complete GSXR USD with matching 120x17 wheel. My yokes are one-off billet items with a staggered arrangement to make up for the shorter forks

Also can the GSXR yokes be used? If not can you recommend anybody that can help ?

GSXR 1100 kit....... pre- 2000 stuff

Checkout the links section above for ideas & yokes, etc. Mine where from a small engineers ooop North, and they swore they'd never do any more, ever again

Gus has just had some yoke work done quite cheap... he might be able to advise, or PM Jack (London Calling) or Rich

If you want to go modern but still retain the looks i.e no USD forks look at the ZXR750 H1. Front ends can be had complete for ?250.00 inc wheel disc's brakes its a 17 inch wheel etc PLUS has speedo drive. The rear wheel takes a 160 tyre as well so should be ok for your swingarm. Yokes can be made to fit with Zed stem and a spacer although you do loose some steering lock.

Eddie,soon I'll be able to lend you a gsxr back wheel,4.5" with a 170/60 tyre fitted,so you check clearaces,etc.
Easiest thing with different forks,yokes,is to use the stem from your current bottom yoke and have it pressed into the GSXR yoke.

Its called what to do with new wheels , in the advice and help section probably about page 8. (just in case the link does not work)

Try not to use suzuki gear as its not right!! izax enginereeing in mansfiled do offset yokes to make up for the lack of length for a usd front end. But for the same price about ?450 maxton will extend usd forks for you.
Bear in mind if you fit usd you will lose turning circle.
I did speak to a guy who fitted zxr400 forks and yokes and wheels into a z1000 and he reckons all he had to do was change the bearings on the stem. (Whereas my zx7r steeering stem is way to fat to take the bearings to fit a z1000 frame.) ZRX1100/1200 fork length is right for a z1000 but I dont kno about the steering stem diameter. A zrx 1100 rear end will fit a z1000 with a new sleeve made up, so could be a quick solution to get a new rear end with big tyre.
I did not pursue fitting new wheels in the end as I have a z1000 with zzr110 forks and yokes and 17"relaced spoked wheels.

Eddie,you might the SRAD front end a little too short and they don't run a speedo drive either.
Most mass produced U.S.D. front ends are heavier than RWU front ends and tend to be very heavy on the front fork oil seals.
I've been told by one of my trade contacts that some of the OHLINS U.S.D. forks get through fork oil seals like a little too often

Heres a picture of a CB900 I fitted a SRAD front end to. Used a modified laverda speedo drive skimmed to a minimum to fit. Very short so ground clearance was a problem.

Saw this bike again today at Newark with Rich. Apart from a paint job she's just about as I sold her 6 years ago. Small world.

He`s after some yolks to do at moment anyway as he`s wanting cash to get me to spray his Simpson helmet. His work was all over the yolks feature in this months Streetfighters mag. Top notch. zrx 11 and 12 yokes fit straight into a z1100r frame (just file off bracket on headstock)so should fit a z1000j
you could use suzuki forks in them also ,
a sprocket from a 89 zx10 in 530 size is offset enough to work with a 4.5x17 inch wheel,i just reversed the rear sprocket and it lined up,this was with a slingshot swinging arm adapted for twin shocks,and works when i changed it for a zrx arm.i had slingshot forks lengthened but switched to zrx forks.

Spoke to Yantosh and he said the most he`d charge for yokes is ?350 and thats for top-end stepped 4" things with hidden bolts,etc, etc. Lesser spec would obviously be far less. HTH.
