My z1000a2 still has the original separate regulator/rectifier setup on it. The rectifier certainly looks its age and as I'm in the process of completely rebuilding the bike I'm wondering if it's worth upgrading/replacing them both with a single setup as the bike will be getting used as a daily ? Any recommendations.....or is the original kit very reliable ?

realistically one of them will fail eventually purely on age, however having said that if it is working now and giving the correct output at around 13.5` 14 volts under full load at 4000 rpm there is no reason to swap it for the sake of it, just buy a replacement integrated unit and put in a box ready just my opinion you understand ...other opinions will be along presently

Bin it, I kept mine on for far too long and eventually it crapped out & took my Dyna S with it.

Bin it, my original took out the alternator wiring.

Cheers guys, it looks like I'll be converting it to a modern setup then. I'll not bin em though I'll box them up all with the other standard bits I've removed just to keep them with the bike

Get shut they're crap! they weren't too reliable when new so even more dodgy now, there's a good chance they will cook your wiring or maybe worse battery acid over your pipes etc.

Just got a couple of brand new Cbr600 jobbies tenner each,will adapt them with the old plugs for both my projects,seen too many exhausts ruined with batteries boiling...

Yes mine did exactly what Pauljac says - around 1990 when the unit was, I suppose around 12 years old.

After a run out, the battery had boiled dry and was too hot to handle.
With adverse affect on Chrome exhaust!

Acquired a modern replacement in since then & everything ok - I think I got the replacement from electrexworld
From that experience I decided I did not want an original item back - even if I could find one!

don't get fooled here yes the original regulator was not up to the job but even the modern units can fail especially the H**** ones if you are replacing the regulator i would strongly advise to replace the battery to a gel type as these wont spill acid all over your £1000 + exhausts

yep get rid!! mine completely cooked the whole loom on my 1000a1

Yes agree with Z1b man always use Agm batts now,but have not had any probs with any Hodna combined units,would hazard a guess most of the units on sale now are made in Prc now ,,,,
