Fork swap on '78 Z1000 LTD. Advice needed

#1 PostAuthor: td5_pete » Thu Dec 22, 2016 3:20 pm

I seem to remember reading on this forum a couple of years ago, that swapping out the front-end for a Zephyr 750 (41mm forks ?) was relatively straightforward ?

Has anyone done this and can offer any advice ?

I already bought a Zephyr 750 yoke a while back, but I'm now ready to tackle this project. What else would I need - Just the forks ?
I intend to keep the original front wheel.

Thanks for any wisdom

The easiest way is to swap the stems over between the yokes to retain your original length and bearing sizes.

Zephyr stems have 25 or 26X47X15 top bearings I think yours are 30x48x13

Check on the wemoto site as they have usefully included the bearing sizes in their part lists.

The front wheel bearings are the same at 17x40x12mm, so a ZR750 front axle will fit the Z1000 wheel. That is the good bit....

Then you run into the problem of having a 19" front wheel mounted in a set up meant for 17" wheels..... so the mudguard, caliper mounts and disc mounts will all be out. It is NOT straightforward mixing and matching parts. Dropping the complete front end in is slightly simpler. You only need worry about the headstock mounts and steering stops then.....

Are you changing the back end too ?
Why do I persist in debating with idiots ? I really should know better :)

Thanks - yes it's just dawned on me that this is not as straightforward as I had imagined. I need to do some more thinking about what I really want to achieve.
