Z1000 wheels - not one for the purists !

#1 PostAuthor: mike_p » Sun Oct 23, 2016 6:30 pm

Okay so I've decided to get my original z1000 wires respoked and re-rimmed with alloy rims slightly wider than stock (yeah I know standard wheels are fine 😀 ) What I'm wondering is.....as I'm putting new rims on....is it worth dropping size to 17" rims as well ? Or does it cause a problem with something I haven't thought of ?
Cheers

You'll need to raise the gearing by a little bit, the speedo will read fast, you'll lose some ground clearance and the bike will steer quicker.

Mike_P, the most important thing when going with a new REAR rim for the Z1000 is to note that they are one directional, meaning the spokes on the chain side are slightly different angle to the ones on the other side, this is due to the difference in flange sizes of the hub.

You will note on your original rear rim there is a small arrow to assist with re-spoking. This will mean different spoke hole drilling for 20 of the spokes.

I would go for smaller size rim 17"

Oh! the speedo is off the front wheel, so leave that a 19" rim, if it looks a good match..
