Brake light idiot light comes on when you brake, flashes when the brake light bulb is blown, so all as should be.
Swop the oem bulb system for single LED and idiot light is on all the time. So i figure the brake light failure unit uses the resistence in the oem bulb system somehow and allows the idiot light on and off when it should. Measure the resistance of the oem bulb as 35 ohms in situ and 5 ohms on the bulb alone. Add in a 35 ohm resistor in the live before the LED but no change, LED is on all the time. Tried 60 ohm, no change, tried 150 ohm no change.
The only way to get an LED to work properly that I can find is to run the oem bulb and the LED in parrallel with the oem bulb tucked out the way and painted black so it doesn't show when the brakes are applied.
anyone know how it can be done without the oem installed.?

Hi Keith, everything I know about electrics says that shouldn't work, electricity taking the least path of resistance and all that? But I'm no sparky!

As Keith said..

Ohms Law - I=V/R

By putting the resister in parallel you lower the total resistance and increase the total current load through the switch. The voltage and current to the LED are unchanged.
