is there much difference between z9/z1000 and a z1000 shaft frame? i would imagine pretty much the same at the front of the loop its the rear section i was wondering about?
are they wider at all at the swinging arm pivot point

Yes! Shaft frame is wider at the swingarm pivot.

From memory the shafter frame is at least 300mm wide at the pivot point.
It won't take a Z900/1000 tank or tailpiece either.

Yes, the st frame is more heavily built around the underside and rear. The whole frame will be stiffer to cope with the nature of the driveline.

I measured it approximately (with everything in place), it is about 280mm wide. The geometry also differs slightly from a mk2 frame, basically sod all fits without work but I hear a z900 a4 tank will fit :) . It's an ideal frame for fitting a modern rear end, I had a zzr1400 swinger knocking about and even that would have fitted with room to spare. I have seen a couple with round zed tanks fitted but as to how easy that was I don't know.
