In prep for the Warsteiner trip thought it would be wise to replace the chain and sprockets on the Z1B. Any thoughts out there on the best type and make of chain and sprockets?

I do a 530 conversion kit. JT o ring chain. PM me if interested

The best drive chain is DID.

Tsubaki chains are one of the best in my expirence. I expect you won't notice the difference between most japanese chains unless you do a lot of miles in the wet.

not for the purists but i've gone 530 on my Z1 and much prefer it.

Kawasaki have switched over to DID on all their big bikes. Only the small cc or lower power models still come with Tsubaki chains from the factory ...... which kinda tells it's own story

JT chain is not Japanese BTW - and they had problems with their O ring stuff which meant a full recall a while back. Their sprockets are decent enough, but you get what you pay for with their drive chains.

As with most things there are bound to be different views on this. I sell lots of JT chain without problems, i have not heard of a recall and the chain is used on race bikes. I am confident in the X1R heavy duty chain i supply however i would be happy to quote for DID if anyone prefers.

Fair point. I didn't know that. Though it is just as likely that Kawasaki have gone for the best deal as it is that they've gone for the best quality.

I can only speak for expirence from my drz, which does mostly green laneing and non competitive events, so the chain has a horrible duty cycle, tsunami chains last for ages - better than did it seems.

As its a second bike, my GPz only does 1500 dryish miles a summer. At that rate the chain on mine (a did as it happens) will last at least ten years, and it's a socking great thing, so I won't get too hung up over the excellence of the chain on the z1000 I'm building now.

I went with a 530 conversion on my Z1B. I would think most decent chains would be OK on our classics due to the mileage we do on them.

Is Dave retiring ?

I just went for a 530 conversion on my z9, most noticeable thing about it was the weight saving - 1.1kg less, and it's all unsprung mass of course .
Prev chain lasted a decade or more , possibly 30k miles - but then I've got a Scottoiler . This chain and sprocket will see the bike out I reckon. Downside is it's a bit costlier, but if I ever just have to replace the chain it'll be cheaper at that time.
