Guys has anybody had any experience or issues matching 1.5 ohm Blue Dyna Coils to the standard MK11 exciter setup please ?

I thought you needed 3 ohm (green)? Thats whats I run on my "J" and 1980 Z1000LTD B3/4

Dyna 2000 unit uses grey 2,2 ohm.

Your logic is good Mark but the J ignition coils run at about 2.8 ohms so 3 is good, the book states between 1.5 an 1.8 for the Mk11/ST coils, hence the ?

the 1.5 ohm dynas i have are red.... to be wired in series for a twin spark head

appears its a library picture, however to muddy the waters even more FFS the red ones are purported to be 6v :?? so as long as their part number is correct .....DC2-1 I suppose their the correct item, anyway back to the question ....anybody please

the cct diagram has them wired in series so 6v would be correct

post script Dyna reckon the coils are not voltage rated and the 6v coils will be fine on a 12 volt system, sounds reasonable

I'm running 3 ohm Green Dynacoils with my standard Mark II ignition.
You need to remove the Ballast Resistor used with the standard MKII coils.
Been running like this for 3 years with no issues.

thats interesting, I didn't spot the Ballast so upon further investigation low and behold there it is, however when you check the bible the ballast and coil readings add up to 3 ohms in series so your setup is quite legitimate. The blurb states that as the coils are so low resistance the ballast is to limit the current to prevent overheating, its all clever stuff

Clever maybe - but pointless (sic) - why didn't they just leave the ballast out and use the "normal" (for Zeds) 3.0 ohm coils :?:

That was my point Mark, design engineers usually have a valid reason for stuff... Its just not alway obvious and us mortals can only surmise and speculate, anyway im gonna get some 1.5 ohm coils and leave the resistor in place ... Cos I can :)

Keith,
Best to go for 3 Ohm coils without the ballast resistor because if a 30 year old plus MKII ignition fails at some point then 1.5 Ohm coils are no good for a Dyna S ignition.
Anyway, that was my logic for buying 3 Ohm coils.

Agree - less is more - the ballast resistor my go tits-up  I reckon they had a load of old coils to shift

4 o clock logic took over this morning whilst suffering from insomnia so its the way I'm going :D this decision is made easier by the fact I have a number of green coils to go at lurking in the loft :up

PS thanks for takin the time to read and answer guys :D
