Which Ohlins Shocks to buy?

Guys

I'm starting to pull some of the pieces together on the 1000J project. I'm going to have the ZRX12 Swingarm from Eddie on the rear with Zephyr forks and wheels from Gary.. Now I need to figure out which Ohlins to buy for the rear.. I'm thinking that the 17" back wheel will loose me some ride hight, so should I get a ZRX set rather thank Z1000J ones? Or something else? I guess the logical thing to do is wait and measure up but that requires patience :) so hoping someone has an answer ahead of that so I can order a set up soon..

Modern 17" wheels have a similar diameter to old 18"... check by getting a tape measure out :wink:

Agreed that would be the sensible thing to do only problem is I don't have the wheels yet so trying to jump the gun maybe :)

I used Gazi shocks on my new bike and Works performance on my ELR both comparable to Ohlins but cheaper. Worth thinking about alternative shocks as ohlins are very expensive for the fully adjustable ones.

Best wait till you have the S/arm & wheel fitted...just to be sure how the bike sits.

By the way...having trouble finding suitable packing material/boxes...Hopefully will have it all sorted by mid week :??

I have a ZRX1100 swinging arm with a 17" wheel from a ZXR400 in it running Conti Attak tyre and I have the "cheap" Ohlins in it on my Lawson. More than happy to pop round to the lock up and measure them for you if required.

Rob's correct in terms of options of piggy back style shocks. If you want to go ott Wilbers or Nitron also could be options!

I put ZRX length YSS on my 1000R as I always think the arse looks low on these bikes anyway, YSS are a well built item but I haven't done many miles at all on the bike since completion, they are half the price of top line Ohlins.

I got some great info from Zedhead for Ohlins options for my 1100R, any future mods on hold at the moment.

There are so many things to consider here.
I started with some adjustable length cheapies after an initial dry build with Rex shocks. Rex are 20mm longer than Zed which throw up a couple of issues.
For me the most important issue was to get the bike sitting at the right level. I had decided to extend the front forks which unlike the rear when fitting a 17" wheel do come up shorter. That brought the lower frame rails to where they were originally for ground clearance which then dictated where the rear should be.
As I suggested in my PM, after trialing some borrowed Rex shocks I made up some struts out of box section. That showed me that with my wheel, tyre and swingarm combination standard Zed length would be right. The adjustable length shocks confirmed it. Any longer than stock and the back end looked too high, caused me issues with chain tension, made checking the oil level tricky and made the bike lean over too far on the stand.
Once running with the cheapies I could feel every movement and confirmed that bottoming out caused no issues.
Finally fitting top line Ohlins showed just how good these shocks are.
How do they feel? In the short time I rode with them I didn't even notice them. They were either sublime or didn't move at all.

Finally dont forget there are different types of Ohlins. Though all the same length there are changes to spring strength and valving. These are for the Zephyr 1100. Dave (Zedhead) was very helpful.
