Z1000R Steering Lock Removal Help

Can anyone advise on the following please ?
If you have any pics that would be awesome -

A mate has a Z1000R with steering lock on the headstock (not part of ignition lock). The lock is free but he would like to get a key cut for it - as opposed to drill it out and scrap it.

Problem is -
He has no key for it, ignition key does not fit and he says he cannot see a key number stamped into the face of the barrel (which I was expecting)

He says there is a rivet fixing visible but he is worried that without a key to turn the barrel this will not release it fully.

If anyone has dealt with similar please shout up and I will pass on the info or put you in touch with him.

He is based in WELWYN GARDEN CITY, HERTFORDSHIRE if any experts are nearby.

Many thanks from Mark

you can get him direct here if preferred - stevoramone@gmail.com

From memory remove rivet and the cover, the lock should just come out but be careful and insert the ignition key to stop the lugs springing out, he should be able to file the lugs down then to suit the key.

Thanks Paul,

Would Kawasaki have any record of original key numbers ?

Am I right to think seat lock/ helmet hook would have same key number as steering lock and ignition when these came out of the factory ??

although i have never seen that type of lock fitted to that model i would imagine its the same as all the other locks on the bike but you say the ignition key does not fit the steering lock. does the ignition key fit the helmet & seat lock? there is a key no stamped on the metal plate at the back of the seat / helmet lock has the ignition switch been changed at any time. i am sure you can remove the lock if you remove the steering stem & turn the locking pin with a pair of long nose pliers. the number is stamped on the lock barrel

Both my Z1000R's have had this type of steering lock and it is listed on the parts diagram for this model.

I seem to recal that my first R had a separate small key that only fitted the steering lock, my current R only has one key that fits the ignition and all the locks but doesn't seem to fit the steering lock.

Now on either bike the steering lock or all the others could haven been changed at some point or on my current R the steering lock could just have a seized barrel and I'm not gonna force my one and only key into it, I have a new blank to be cut so may be more willing at that point.

The lock part number itself appears unavailable but I bet they are on EBay listed for other period models, the cap and rivet are still available.

Cheers, Paul
