what are the differences between the early z1000a crank and the later z1000 mk2/shaft crank. From what I can see its only the number of teeth on the cam chain gear and a keyed alternator taper. Is the z1000 Ltd the same set up as a mk2/shaft crank. Mates got a box of bits and is not sure which model its from. Cam cover in with the bits is the later square type and is off a usa import. Not a z1000j.
cheers

correct
the 900 and 1000a1 and A2 are all interchangeable
in other words each will fit the other
the 1000mk2 is only interchangeable between the 1000h and Z1rD3 and some Ltd 1000 and police models
J model crank is hyvo chain

Thanks for that, he doesnt have the cams only crank and rods. We are trying to determine which engine the crank came out of. I believe its out of a 1979/80 ltd or shaft as it has 16 teeth on the cam chain gear and a keyless alternator taper. Can you get a crank with 16 teeth and a keyed alternator taper or do the keyed alternator taper cranks only come with 15 teeth as per the early z1000a models (round end cam cover type)

A 16t crank will be a Mk2 ,ST or late LTD or indeed any Square cam covered kickstart model,
No matter what model the engine is out of all 16t cranks are the same.
It has one extra tooth on the crank and the alt taper is fatter ( but has the same angle) and is keyless only.
The earlier small alt rotors don't fit so you would need the dished rotor and windings plus the alt cover to match.
The mk2 crank is also slightly lighter than the earlier thou but heavier than the 900.
Depending on year an LTD engine could be a mk2 type or the earlier type.

There is also some extra webbing around the clutch housing on the top casing, to strengthen it.
A
proper Round cam cover can be fitted - but you need to swap the top cam chain idler sprocket for an older Z900 or Z1000 type
