it possible to change the cam chain on my 550 in situ without taking the feckin engine to bits? if it is how is it done?

not unless you use a soft link cam chain. you can leave the barrel & cylinder head on if your only replacing the chain but it would be false economy not to replace the rear cam chain guide & if you do that its a full engine strip
