Z1000 Ltd- Running rough

Hello,
I am new to the board. I have just bought a Ltd 1000, and she is running really rough, backfiring, missing- horrible. So I have replaced the plugs, leads, coils, still the same. Took the carbs off, checked the diagrams- Ok, cleaned them out, cleaned the main jets, checked the needles, floats. Everything looks OK. But it still the same.
I am not that much of a mechanic, as you probably can tell. The only thing I can think is that it might be something to do with the timing.
Can anyone give me an idea as to what to do next, please. I havent ridden the bike yet, and it driving me mad, just want to get on it and go somewhere.
Thanks for reading, and hello to everyone ion the board.

Welcome Ian what leads you to suspect the timing in particular?
Did you unscrew the hidden pilot jets in the CV carbs?
They are covered by a tiny ally plug in the bottom of the body within the float bowls.
Mine has been running rough for two years.
I re-wired it twice, removed the ignition switch and replaced it, removed all the switchgear and replaced it, bought a new battery, replaced the entire ignition system, replaced the alternator and rectifier / regulator.
Long story short it was the fuse.
Not broken on the cross bar but snapped off at both legs inside the plastic cover where you cant see it. (car type blade fuses)
Start off with the basics and work youre way through, familiarising yourself with the layout. It will pay dividends in terms of you level of confidence when you do go out on it.

Thanks for the replyies.
I have got 12v at the coils, and it has non standard filters, the airbox is gone. Not sure what they are though.
I did find the pilot jets but couldnt get it out, I am going to take the carb to the air machine at the garage and blow it through them. The reason I thought timing was because I am out of ideas. Thanks again, if you have any more ideas i will try, cheers, Ian

Can you tell if its starting on all cylinders?
Start it and check if all the downpipes are getting hot.
Dors it backfire through the exhausts or back through the carbs?
does it tick over better when first started or when hot?
where about in the country are you? Someone may be able to pop over and look at it with you.
Oh and hello

Hello oldzed
its on all cylinders, on and off, they are get hot. Its backfires through the exhaust, and its better at low revs, its when you rev it that its really bad?
Thanks for your help, im in the south of birmingham

How long have you got?
If the carbs are playing up you need to strip them to component level and go from there.
There are hidden filters and the main emulsion tube (needle jet) will be corroded around the outside.
Pilots must come out.
They will run adequately with individual filters but to get the best out of them they are better with an airbox. If you have no choice then make the best of what you have. Are the filters all of a similar condition? No holes or aged differently?
If it has the original fuse holder, take it off and have a really good look.
I have had and seen several where the terminals on the back have corroded and snapped without falling completely away.
Just keep plugging away at it. Everything will need doing one way or another. Might as well get it out of the way now.

Thanks for the advice, it is now sorted pretty much.
I stripped the carbs back completely, and for some reason on one of the carbs, the plate that is on top of the needle, there was 2 of them instead of one!!
Once it was removed it runs 95% Ok, it could never have been right like this.
All I have now is a little bit of backfire coming back through 1 carb, so I guess if a balance the carbs, and maybe alter the air screw for the mising carb it should be OK.
Thanks again- Ian
