The release lever may have come disconnected from the clutch push rod.
Trying to paraphrase the manual
With the release shaft turned to the rear of the bike, turn the release shaft towards the front of the bike so it engages with the end of the push rod.
The release shaft my need to be jiggled up or down slightly to get it to engage on the push rod. There should be about 4mm clearance between the underside of the shaft [where it fits on the splines] and the top of the clutch cover.
When installed correctly, the release shaft should be angled in to the engine, that is, not parallel to the frame.
On the times I have had this sort of problem, it is normally just persevere until it all sits right.
This is providing there is no damage to the end of the clutch push rod or the release lever.
According to the book, if you remove the release lever from the clutch cover, the oil seal should be replaced.
