Z1-R Ammeter Testing (with pics)

The Factory manual says to attach a 12 volt battery and 8 watt bulb in series with the ammeter to test it.
You are then supposed to reverse connections to make sure you are getting a similar reading in positive and negative ranges,
I could only find a 10watt bulb. But the test worked fine so I am pleased.
Just need to work out why the harness is not sending the signal through now
I have swapped the fuse with the working one from the fuel gauge and that is not the problem.

Mark find the shunt wire in the loom and alter the length (make it longer) until the meter deflects , there is a scientific way of doing it but you need to know some relative resistances which will have altered over the years anyway

...... Hint the shunt wire is the long red/white wire and its wrapped back on itself in the thick part of the loom that come up from the LHS panel

...or just put a small (1 ohm?) variable resistor in series with the shunt wire and twiddle with it until you're happy with the meter deflection.
Once you know the amount of resistance you need to add (measure the pot with your DVM), wire in a fixed resistor of around that value.

I think next stage will be testing continuity from the meter loom to the block connector in case it is an easy fix (hopefully avoid a new meter loom if I can).
If that is ok I can get on with rebuilding the meter bracket.
Then I want to check continuity around the ammeter fuse assembly cos that's an add on to the standard Z1 harness I am used to.
Then I will hunt out the shunt wire as Keith suggests. May need some more pics/ pointers at that stage. But I got to get the harness back on the bike and fed with some power for that stage I think.

For what its worth Mark you could drive yourself insane trying to get it to work, I know I did

the unit was only meant to give an indication of current flow one way or the other and without knowing what the FSD of the meter is its pretty hit and miss what you do. Either Russ's idea or mine will give you a result

BTW the resistances involved are not very big from what I remember scientific or not ,a hot 10 watt bulb has a resistance of about 14ohms
