How do you identify original shocks?

I have a reasonable set with 'Japan' stamped into the top mount...are they original?

Good point Gary.Just checked mine and havent even got that stamped on ! if Ive got reps ( was told they were original) would just get a new rep set I think

Original shocks have a small hole for a dowel pin below the top mounting eye (above the chrome shroud) Pattern ones don't have this.....

Can just be seen on this pic of my old A4....

There is a thread (somewhere) in the projects section (I think) showing a strip and re-build of a set of original shocks. Your problem comes when you start wanting to re-chrome the bits which can get quite expensive compared to £50 for a set of pattern ones from Z-Power in nice shiny blingy chrome.
