Which is the best/safest way to remove the engine from the frame?
I have the head and barrel off but it still seems a very unwieldy lump to lift and clear the frame?
Does it make and difference/help to remove the stator and cover?

Easiest way is lie the bike on it's side with engine on an old sofa cushion or similar and lift the frame off. Still recommend 2 people though.

With wheels and forks still attached not very practical for me. Is there particular way or routine to follow to remove it out of the frame with it upright?

Ideally you'll need two men , and equal amounts of muscle and swearing .
I wrap the frame with insulation tape anywhere that i think it'll get scratched .

I used a trolley jack with a piece of mdf bolted to it,get it under the engine to take the weight, remove the bolts and lift out with a mate, easy

pipe lagging can be used to protect the frame

I cut off all the offending frame tubes with a grinder.

Helps to remove the exhaust studs if there fitted.you should be able to lift it out fairly easy if theres no top end on

I found it useful to have a platform of the same height as the engine next to the bike. Pallets, stool, pile of bricks with a piece of wood or whatever. Drain the oil and remove the oil filter as this sits low under the engine.
Take the weight with a trolley jack with a short plank of wood under the engine. Undo the engine bolts and remove. Jack it up a little, then you can Manoeuvre/manhandle it onto the platform without having to actually pick it up.
Worked for me
