After a few weeks phoning around everywhere for a pair of second hand clocks (z1000j2) I've drawn a blank. There was a couple of s/h dealers that had some but they are asking fantasy prices. What I need to know has anyone replaced their clocks with anything else ? I'm not to concerned with originality as long as the alternatives look ok. Secondly can I simply remove the electronic speedo sensor and replace it with a kwak gear driven type ? Are they the same fitting ? I have a few ZX750 Turbo speedo drives. Hopefully I might find some 1000j clocks at Stafford but also open to suggestions.
Thanks in advance,
Pasc.

Hi Pasc,I'm pretty sure you'll need the gear drive for the speedo drive and the circlip that holds it into the front wheel hub.
As for alternative clocks you could try the GPz750 twin shock or Z750L.
How much were the dealers asking for Z1000J1/J2 clocks??

Hi Jack, I've got a pair of zx750 Turbo wheels so maybe they will go in without too much fuss and was thinking of using Gpz750 unitrac clocks as the turbo clocks have a boost guage that is not required (unless I turbocharge the mutha). Another thought was to just use the speedo drive gubbins from the turbo wheels in the z1000 front wheel. I've yet to compare them to see if it will work.
I could only find 2 breakers that had clocks, one was asking ?165 the other was only prepared to sell me the clocks if I also took the headlamp and H/lamp brackets for a total of ?225 plus delivery. His reason being that the rolling chassis he has is near mint and was reluctant to break it. If I were building a concours bike then I might have said ok but it's not, so I don't really want to fork out that kind of money for them. If you or anybody else wants the phone numbers then let me know and I'll pass it on. One breaker could do USA model clocks for about ?80 but the downside being that they were kph and only went to 80mph. I'll investigate the turbo wheels if nothing turns up at Stafford.

Pasc, the wheels will go in but be aware that the GPz has 6 bolt mountings for the disc and the J/R/GPz 7 spoke wheels are 7 bolt. Also they the GPZ 6 bolt discs are 280mm diameter and the J1/J2 discs are 270mm.
You will also need J3/GPz1100B2 fork bottoms as well,as the caliper mounting is offset to allow for the larger diameter.
Guess who found this out the hard way??

Well thats put the kybosh on that idea then. Seriously though Jack thats the sort of info I'm after. I spose next move is to strip the drive mechanics from both wheels and see if I can junk the electronic drive in favour of the cable drive. I'll leave it until after Staffs, never know, some might show up.
Much appreciated Jack.

Pasc,i've just had a butchers at the manual and the drive sleeve appears to be the same for both the electronic and cable speedo drives. This saves you the job of stripping the drive sleeves from the different wheels.
I've fitted GPz/Turbo wheels into a few bikes and it's a worthwhile modification as it gives you an 18" front and a 3" rim on the rear, for a wider tyre.
Happy hunting at Stafford.

Hi Pasc,
Some years ago I had my J's electronic speedo resurrected by a local instrument repair shop after the electronics were damaged. I was amazed that an automotive shop could fix them but back they came right as rain and for a very modest cost. They didn't need any specs supplied to by me so either they had this info(which would surprise me) or this mechanism is pretty standardacross many vehicles
There was no physically damaged to the clocks just the electronics were fried. I sent them both the speedo and the odometer housing in which the majority of the electronics reside
I would assume that there are similar shops in the UK. If you want me to give you details who these people are I will do so but NZ is a long way from UK and freight cost might outway any labour cost savings.

Thanks for the info Kiwiz. Problem is I don't actually have any clocks for the bike as it came without them. I think I'll be looking into just swapping the leccy drive for the gear driven one from the turbo.

Pasc, maybe try some GPz900 or 1000RX clocks as they don't go for silly money on ebay.
I'm still stunned by the prices you were quoted for a set of Z1000J clocks, you'd have to be desperate to pay that for a set.

Cheaper to buy a complete bike strip it and keep the clocks Jack.

Ian,luckily i'm sorted for Z1000J clocks but I know what you mean. The thing is though that bikes prices keep getting lower but building 'em gets dearer.Best overall to get a good 'un and enjoy riding it.

Yeah, I was thinking maybe 1000rx clocks may be a possibility. While the Gpz750 clocks might look more period. Have to see what turns up. The thing is I only paid ?360 for the bike and it is in surprisingly good condition seeing as it was stored for nearly 10 years in a council lock up. I suppose one school of thought would say ?360 for the bike plus ?165 for clocks, just over ?500 for a half decent bike, still cheap. But, I'm not going to encourage daft prices like that. Should have expected it though, one of the breakers that quoted me has a reputation for being a robbing bleeder. In twenty five years of riding Zeds I've never found any of his prices reasonable.

Couldn't agree more Pasc,no point in spending more money than you have to.Unless you're building a totally standard show bike why not mix'n'match to keep your bike on the road for the least money.
And with all that money saved you can get another ZED for double the fun!!!!
