Baz,
I think the early cam chain tensioner housing was fitted to the first 4000 odd bikes.

Early block with the 'wonky' 3 as you put it was circa 14300.
Thin cam chain adjuster was up to circa 10000

that sounds about what i thought, but iv'e got an eng here with all the early bits on it, short head nuts, wonky 3, slim chain adj, etc, the head as even got the tool marks in the fins around the spark plug holes, all pointing to an early eng ?? but eng number is in the 17000's.
does'nt look like its ever been apart either

Baz,
The engines with the wonky 3 are the ones below 14319 and those NOT in the ranges below
Z1E 14319-15096
Z1E 15948-16458
Z1E 16533-17088
Z1E 18270-18379
Z1E 18442-19079
The reinforced adjuster started to appear around the 10000 engine with a mixture of engines ranging from numbers (approx.) 9000-11000 either having the old or new adjuster
