Cylinder bore damage

Hi, I recently picked up a cheap z1000 in bits and it had been off the road for the last 8 years or so due to an apparent piston ring failure. I have taken some photos, can anyone help confirm if this would have caused the damage to the cylinder shown?

The bike appears to be all there in amongst various boxes. There is a small hole under the r/h lower frame rail and the bottom engine mount had to be cut to get the engine out. It's in a sorry state. Assuming it's on the original bore, what would be the best course of action for the engine?

Some more pics;

It has the look of an engine that has over heated. May have been run out of oil looking at the outside.
Numbers one and two cylinders were running weak (hot) cant see three / four.
Exhaust collector box looks to have been a bit warm too!
Maybe the wrong type of oil or poor fueling / setup after exhaust change or thrashing without baffles, ignition retarded etc.
Number three exhaust cam lobe is suspiciously clean. Was it tight on the clearance / possible bent valve?
Are those cracks in the liner or scratch marks?

Those studs freeze too easily in the engine mount rubber sleeves. Bad design~ i mean rubber mounted engine and the through bolt arrangement especially as the rear of the engine is solid mounted!!

That would be a serious undertaking to re-build and i would guess a couple or grand even with what you have uncovered so far.
I may have a set or barrels and pistons but i think that is the least of you're worries.

Hi Al, thanks for your knowledgeable input once again. Some better photographs may help but essentially you have summed it up well. Initially I was going to have the rolling chassis and look at putting something else in it but it was so cheap that even if I can't use much of the motor it's no big deal. For now it will sit in the garage while I decide what to do. Ideally the motor needs a thorough looking over.
