530 Chain & Sprockets

#1 PostAuthor: Hinckley » Fri Nov 28, 2014 1:10 pm

Ok - so my project (900A4) is coming along nicely, I've started to look into final drive.

I'd like to use a 530 chain instead of the standard 630.

Standard 630 ratio is 15t front 33t rear giving the ratio 2.20.

After doing a bit of research there appears to be a fair amount of conflicting advice in what ratio would be best - and what's available - and how to space/offset.....

I get the divide by 5 multiply by 6 to work out the sprocket conversion.
The front works out at 18 exactly so a 530-18t is spot on.
The rear works out at 39.6 so a 530-40t is the closest available.
So for the 530 set up - using 18t front 40t rear with a ratio 2.22 seems to be the way to go.
This sprocket set up seems readily available as is the 112 link chain recommended.
I discounted using 18t front and 39t rear (2.17 ratio) as the rear sprocket would have to be made from aluminium - although not expensive - I'd be going into unknown territory.

All good so far - then I started to look into spacing.
The 630 sprockets are flat and 10mm thick - the 530 I've found are also flat but 8mm thick.
Front spacers available seem to be either 1.5mm or 6mm thick! - I couldn't find any 1mm ones,
Rear spacers although there is one listed in the 900A4 manual they are no longer available and there is no mention of how thick they are anyway.

So - It would be helpful to know from those that have done the conversion - what spacers have you guys used? - and where did you get them from?

I'm using a standard rear wheel/swingarm set up.

I did not use any spacers, as 630 and 530 chains are same width (530 chain 0.2mm narrower).

see link explains conversion

I bought the 530 chain and sprockets for my bike from Ray @ Debben performance.

I have now Chris

Alex, I have some kits with Talon 42T rear sprockets for Z1. No doubt I could get 40T.

Thanks guys, I already spoke to Debbens.

Dave, can you see if they do a 40t - 130 PCD - 89mm centre.
Steel coloured not gold.

Still a bit unsure of the spacing though, I understand the chain is a tad narrower, but Ray said the sprockets are 8mm thick not 10mm, surely using a 1.5mm front spacer would make the rear out of line.

Any further information would be useful.
