the front brake lever went solid, the bike wouldn't stop, then eventually it became free again. The front brake is now binding I have twin discs on my Z1,one is still free, the question is are the brake parts still available ie service kits for original calipers and possibly the same for the master cylinder. Is this a job that can be tackled by an amature.

Rimmer, bits are available (see links on this site) but needs a competent hand to sort properly/safely!!! I'm sure one of the gang will pick up on this thread soon and offer more help!;)

Rimmer, don't forget to get some red rubber grease for the new seals as this will make the job easier.I use ROCK OIL but there are many other makes available.
It will be much easier to pump out the caliper pistons whilst your calipers are still connected to the master cylinder.Hydraulic pressure is much better than using an airline, especially if your pistons are seized/binding.
Avoid getting any copper grease on the rubber seals, boots, etc as it makes them swell up.

Sorry to be a pesimist, but if your name is derived from Red Dwarf and from your appraisal of your problem in the first post. I wouldn't let you near my brakes and I hope you have a workshop manual to show how the parts go together.

Firstly see if caliper is seized on holder shaft bolts(see if they still slide) then piston if it slides back in bore.To eliminate,Stainless pistons help to save on corrosion as do stainless holder shaftbolts try Pegasus engineering for these items speak to Graham on 02476678518

rimmer was a nick name from when i used to work a way as a shopfitter, but thats another story,Ive taken off the calipers, i,m going to order 2no repair kits from z power and i will need 1 new piston, but we have also found that plunger that the lever pushes into the master cylinder is snapped i need a repair kit but i dont know if the one i have is a 5/8 double or not what is the measurement of? they do a repair kit for the standard type but whats the difference

The bore size should be cast into the master cylinder body.

its the bore diameter of the master cylinder. Measure it.

Double discs need m/c bore of 5/8th of an inch.....imperial scale not metric
