Hi guys,
I was talking to my local chrome platers ref getting a Harris re-chromed, down pipes aren't too bad but the silencer is a bit tatty.
Plater suggested getting the silencer polished !
Anyone ever done this and was the finish any good ?
Cheers

Maybe he means have the substrate metal polished before he can
re-chrome it?

Hi Jay,
He didn't want to re-plate the silencer because it would contaminate his bath.
He said if the silencer was steel (check with a magnet) then he could get it polished to a mirror finish.
To be honest, not something I would have thought.
Cheers

Are you sure he wasn't thinking of aluminium? that can ce mirror polished & does look good. If steel was polished, then not plated it would go rusty almost instantly.

Be great if you could have the inside of the silencer clean
enough for plating wouldn't it?
Polishing the substrate metal (steel) would be fine, when storing
the bike I'd wipe it over with Lear Chemicals' Marine 'Corrosion Block'
grease. I bought some at Stafford show, their ACF-50 spray
neutralises corrosion / rust, prevents it, but the grease would
be ideal for long term bike winter storage.
Supposed to last up to 18 months when exposed to marine conditions,
so could be worth a try?

Thanks for the replies guys....spoke to the plater again and they said if I get it cleaned and stripped they would chrome it.......gonna take it down next week and get a quote.
If it's too dear, will just get a Vance & Hines from zpower
The old AC50 is good stuff, my garage suffers from condensation in the winter, so I like to make sure my bikes are protected.....Rust Never Sleeps!!!
