Z1-R Self Cancelling Indicators - How Do They Work ??

Could somebody tell me what the mechanics of the turn signal self cancel mech on a Z1R are please?

I have the Z1R restorer book which mentions a front fork sensor that picks up distance travelled and I am guessing that the box at base of left handle bar switch must contain a timer unit ??

I can see that it is activated by the combination switch that does manual, auto or hazards.

Can't see a distance sensor on the fron fork parts diagram here -

Has there been a post on this or any good links with pics I could read please?

Thanks from Mark

The sensor is a small unit under the speedo it connects to the speedo as an extension the cable then goes into this ...the is a small analogue counter inside consisting of a rotating magnet and a tiny glass reed switch.. these pulses are picked up by the "black box" on the RHS fork leg .. after a predetermined period of counts the solenoid in the hump under the LHS switch gear is activated by pulling in, this releases the peg holding the spring that re centres the switch ....simplz :D

The first point is it aint an ammeter, its actually a voltmeter, its controlled by a " shunt wire"" in the loom this is set to a predetermined length to allow enough voltage to deflect it either way whilst it passes through the meters deflection coil. They were never brilliant from. new  and were only meant to show an indication of the voltage coming from or going to the battery. The workshop manual shows you how to test for deflection if that works your in wiv a chance of doin summat. You can open the loom and find the red/white wire looped into it get some similar cross section wire and make the loop longer. ( google resistance in parralel ) dont go mad, start with about 150mm of wire and see if the meter deflects. Now I can actually hear the electronics wizzers wincing  however without anpy technical info on the resistance of the meter coil and how much voltage it requires for full deflection or the factory set resistance of the shunt wire its all guess work anyway. Footnote for the princely sum of £5 you can buy a fully sealed digital volt meter and conceal it somewhere on the bike and it will give you a constant indication of what the battery voltage is in nice blue numbers :D

Thanks Keith

I want to ask a bit more about the meter but I will start another thread if that is ok - and copy your info into it.

Do you have a Z1-R D1 Kawasaki Service Manual??

In which case could you send me a pic of the cover and part number so I know what I am after. Or stick a pic on here.

Not sure if Z1-R was a manual on it's own or just a supplement within the Z1000 A2 manual

my email is pertonpc@talktalk.net if that is easier to send the pic.

Cheers from Mark
